Orban Addresses Fueling Ukraine Conflict

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has asserted that EU politicians, weapons producers, and financial institutions are the three main forces driving the continuation of the war in Ukraine.

Speaking at a campaign event in Szeged on Sunday, Orban restated his opposition to Brussels’ handling of the confrontation between Ukraine and Russia.

He described the first group as European politicians who believe “a country with nuclear weapons can be defeated through a conventional war.” The second group, he said, consists of arms manufacturers who “always want war or some kind of armed conflict.”

Orban continued: “the bankers also want you to continue because otherwise, how will they get their money back? They can only recover their money if Russia is defeated militarily.” He was referring to large loans intended to support Ukraine’s war effort and the expectation that Russia would eventually be forced to pay reparations.

The prime minister urged voters not to trust EU politicians to be “sensible enough not to drag us into war,” instead calling on the public’s common sense amid rising anti-war sentiment across the bloc. He emphasized that his opposition to prolonging the conflict stems from a desire to prevent Ukraine’s collapse, which he warned would be catastrophic for neighboring Hungary.

Last week, EU leaders rejected the European Commission’s plan to issue a ‘reparations loan’ backed by frozen Russian assets to cover Kiev’s budgetary needs. Instead, they agreed to borrow against the EU’s collective budget, while Hungary and Slovakia were granted exemptions. Russia denounced the proposal to use its frozen assets, warning that such a move would constitute theft and a breach of international law.
