Orban Blames Multiple Figures for Prolonging Ukraine War

(MENAFN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has argued that three main groups — EU politicians, weapons producers, and financial institutions — are driving the continuation of the Ukraine conflict.

During a campaign event in Szeged on Sunday, Orban restated his opposition to the European Union’s stance on the war between Ukraine and Russia.

He described the first group as European leaders who believe “a country with nuclear weapons can be defeated through a conventional war.” The second group, he said, is made up of arms manufacturers who “always want war or some kind of armed conflict.”

Orban continued by claiming that “the bankers also want you to continue because otherwise, how will they get their money back? They can only recover their money if Russia is defeated militarily.” He was referring to large-scale loans provided to Ukraine and the expectation that Russia would eventually pay reparations.

The Hungarian leader urged citizens not to trust EU politicians to be “sensible enough not to drag us into war,” instead encouraging reliance on public common sense amid rising anti-war sentiment across Europe.

He emphasized that his opposition to prolonging the conflict stems from a desire to prevent Ukraine’s collapse, which he warned would have severe consequences for Hungary.

Just last week, EU leaders dismissed a European Commission plan to issue a ‘reparations loan’ backed by frozen Russian assets to support Kiev’s budget. Instead, they opted to borrow against the EU’s collective budget, with Hungary and Slovakia exempted from the scheme. Russia denounced the idea of using its frozen assets, calling it theft and a breach of international law.
